Junior Golf Development and Clinic
The Junior Golf Development Programme has over 60 children attending the weekly Golf Clinic. The Clinic has been divided into 4 categories - Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Masters. Depending on their performance and ability, children get promoted from one category to the other.
The year 2009/10 was eventful and a couple events are worthy of mention. The Captain Lal Dias invited the Juniors to participate in the Club Championship for the first time concurrently with the more seasoned adult golfers of the club. This was very much appreciated and keenly contested. The winner was Dhanika de Silva and the runner-up was Nadine Jayaratne. Bronze division winner was Zaffar Sikkander and the runner up was Ishira Fernando.
During the year, the Junior Clinic went on a 5-day coaching camp to Victoria Golf Club in Kandy. This was a great success and 22 children participated .
A team of 4 players represented Sri Lanka at the World Junior Open Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand. This provided good exposure and experience to the young Golfers.
The Sri Lanka Golf Union conducted the Junior Open Championship in December 2009. The event was open to all members as well as the caddies children and was sponsored by Prima. 70 children participated and the winner was Sachin de Silva. This was the only sponsored event in the Junior Golf Calendar.
The Juniors are ever so grateful to Mrs. Radha Sunderampillai for her untiring efforts in promoting Junior Golf at RCGC and their wish is that in the coming years there will be more institutions like Prima coming forward to sponsor junior events to promote and encourage the junior golfers.
